Why it matters:

  • Prevents overgrowth that can obstruct pathways and windows

  • Encourages healthy growth and maintains proper plant structure

  • Creates a polished, well-manicured appearance

How we do it:
We prune and shape hedges and shrubs, ensuring they remain healthy, aesthetically pleasing, and well-maintained. Our care extends to disease prevention and seasonal upkeep.

Invasive Shrubs are Still Everywhere In State College

We’re passionate about protecting and restoring our local backyard ecosystems, which is why we offer great deals to replace invasive shrubs—especially barberry. In our view, it’s one of the worst offenders. We don’t mean to step on any toes, but if you have barberry, privet, honeysuckle, or burning bush in your yard, it’s time to consider better alternatives.

These plants spread aggressively, outcompete native species, and disrupt local ecosystems. Fortunately, there are plenty of beautiful, non-invasive options to choose from.

Boxwood is another shrub worth discussing. While not considered invasive, it’s increasingly plagued by disease and pests, including boxwood blight and boxwood leafminer. We’ve seen clients in Park Forest, Boalsburg, Bellefonte, Lemont, and more hammered by the boxwood blight in 2024.

Given these challenges, we strongly recommend against planting new boxwoods. If you’re looking for durable, attractive alternatives suited to your little corner of Happy Valley, give us a call—we’d love to help you make the right choice for your landscape.
