Mulch, Stone, and Groundcover: Weed Prevention and Soil Health
Also Known As: Mulching, Decorative Hardscaping, Landscape Cover Solutions, Ground Cover Installation, Organic and Inorganic Mulch, Gravel and Stone Landscaping
What It Is:
Aesthetic and functional natural ground cover that enhances landscape design, improves soil health, and reduce maintenance. Options include organic mulches, decorative rocks, pea gravel, river stones, and synthetic ground covers.
Why It Matters:
Moisture Retention: Mulch helps soil retain water, reducing the need for irrigation.
Weed Suppression: A protective layer prevents weed growth and minimizes maintenance.
Erosion Control: Rock and mulch prevent soil erosion and water runoff.
Soil Health Improvement: Organic mulch decomposes over time, enriching the soil.
Temperature Regulation: Acts as an insulating layer, keeping roots cool in summer and warm in winter.
Aesthetic Appeal: Enhances curb appeal with decorative textures and colors.
Pest Control: Some mulch types deter insects and rodents.
How We Do It:
Material Selection: We assess your landscape needs and recommend the best ground cover, including bark mulch, wood chips, decorative stone, or gravel.
Professional Installation: Proper depth and layering ensure long-term benefits and visual appeal.
Weed Prevention: Applied properly, mulch alone excels at preventing most weeds. For more thorough results, we can apply targeted pre-emergent herbicides. We do not generally recommend landscape fabric.
Sustainable Practices: Natural mulches are a byproduct of the local logging and timber industries. Think logging is bad? We probably won’t change your mind, but it’s actually extremely beneficial for wildlife and an important component of wildlife conservation and active land management.
Bee Kind Recommendations:
Stay Organic: We love our basic, triple ground, natural bark mulch. It’s effective and cheap.
Rocks are accents: Pea gravel, river rock, lava rock, crushed stone, boulders. All have their place. Due to long-term maintenance concerns, we do not recommend rocks as widespread ground cover.
Ground cover plants: Stay away from the ivy and periwinkle, please. There are many wonderful, low-maintenance, native and non-invasive alternatives like wild ginger, strawberry, partridgeberry, phlox, ferns, violets, sedges, and much more.
Skip the fabric. Just say no to landscape fabrics. It’s an antiquated concept. It works great for a couple years, then it doesn’t, and it’s then that the fun starts. Routine maintenance with organic mulching materials, groundcover plants, and integrated vegetation management is the best approach.
